Gen X and Boomers Show New Interest in Interrailing Across Europe, Survey Finds

The findings come from an HSBC UK–commissioned OnePoll survey of 2,000 adults released today.

Overview

  • A quarter of respondents in these older cohorts say they are keen to try an interrailing trip after missing out when they were younger.
  • Scenic train routes are a major draw for 46%, with many also citing convenience factors such as avoiding airports, visiting multiple countries in one trip, and traveling at their own pace.
  • Practical reservations persist, with 34% deterred by repeated packing and unpacking and 32% worried about delays or missed connections.
  • Across all adults surveyed, 32% would consider a multi-destination trip this year, with 55% seeking varied scenery and 47% motivated by different cultures and cuisines.
  • Top rail hotspots named include Lucca, Zermatt, Lecce, Bolzano, San Sebastián, Braga, Annecy, Ronda, Lake Bled and Nafplion, and HSBC promoted its Global Money account alongside the research.
