GDV Updates Vehicle and Regional Risk Classes, Reclassifying Millions of Drivers

The advisory tables based on 2022–2024 claim data now guide insurers’ pricing decisions for new contracts or upcoming renewals.

Overview

  • About 5.9 million policyholders move to higher Typklassen and roughly 4.5 million to lower ones, while around 32 million remain unchanged, according to the GDV.
  • Model examples include the Renault Clio 1.3 and VW ID.4 Pure 125 moving down two classes and the Ford Focus 1.0 moving up two.
  • Regionalklassen were recalculated, with Leipzig city improving from class 8 to 7, the district of Meißen rising, and Leipzig-Land unchanged, as classifications reflect the vehicle owner’s registration district.
  • The GDV stresses the statistics are nonbinding, allowing insurers to apply them immediately for new policies or from the next insurance year for existing contracts.
  • A class change alone does not set the final premium, which also depends on factors such as mileage and repair-cost trends, and consumers can manage outcomes through SF-class options like Rabattschutz or Schadenrückkauf.
