GDV Finds Car Thefts Down in Germany as Higher Vehicle Values Keep Losses Elevated

New state tallies show theft losses concentrate on pricey SUVs in urban hotspots.

  • Nationwide, 14,162 insured cars were stolen in 2024 with about €293 million paid in claims, with more than a quarter of thefts in Berlin.
  • Thuringia recorded 166 thefts, nearly 11% more than 2023, and average payouts rose above €20,100, lifting total losses by about 32% to over €3.3 million.
  • Saxony logged 587 thefts, a slight decline year over year, yet average compensation climbed to roughly €19,900 as Leipzig and Dresden posted the highest state rates.
  • Saxony-Anhalt saw 380 thefts, five more than 2023, but average payouts fell to about €19,300, bringing total losses down roughly 9% to around €7.3 million.
  • Baden-Württemberg registered 635 thefts, up nearly 11%, with total damage rising 26% to €12.6 million, while the risk remained low at about one theft per 10,000 insured cars.
