GCF Approves $250 Million for ADB-Led ‘Glaciers to Farms’ Climate Resilience Program

The decision unlocks a decade-long ADB investment plan to strengthen climate resilience in glacier-dependent food and water systems.

Overview

  • The program will operate across nine ADB member countries in Central Asia, the South Caucasus, and Pakistan.
  • It targets four glacier-fed river basins — Naryn, Pyanj, Kura, and Swat — covering roughly 27 million hectares with about 13 million direct beneficiaries.
  • Most of the GCF support comes as grants that will be paired with about $3.25 billion in ADB financing over the next decade through country-identified projects.
  • Planned measures include efficient irrigation, water storage, watershed management, glacier and climate assessments, stronger early warning for hazards such as glacial lake outburst floods, and support for social protection and health services.
  • The initiative also builds finance-sector capacity — including for women-led agricultural enterprises — and follows GCF’s 43rd Board approval on October 29, which moves it into project pipeline development and implementation planning.
