GCC Condemns Iran’s Stance on Three Gulf Islands as Tehran Reasserts Sovereignty

Tehran cites newly registered title deeds to argue the dispute is legally and historically settled.

Overview

  • Iran’s foreign ministry said there is no doubt about its sovereignty over Abu Musa, Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb, rejecting UAE claims echoed in a recent GCC statement.
  • The GCC rebuked Iran’s remarks as false and said the islands belong to the UAE, urging Tehran to pursue direct talks or refer the dispute to the International Court of Justice.
  • Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf dismissed the GCC’s position and warned neighboring states not to test Iran’s resolve to defend its territorial integrity.
  • Iran’s State Organization for Registration of Deeds and Properties said on November 30 that title deeds for the three islands were officially registered under the government’s name.
  • Iran said its contacts with the IAEA run continuously through its Vienna mission and denied any special indirect communication channels with the United States.
