Gboard Team Reveals Conveyor-Belt Keyboard Prototype

The team published full open-source plans to let hobbyists build the device as a tongue-in-cheek exploration of one-handed typing.

Overview

  • Google’s Gboard team, which announced the Rotating Keyboard on Oct 1, posted open-source designs on GitHub and said the prototype will not be sold as a product.
  • The upright conveyor design uses loops of keycaps with 29 keys per belt and supports both uppercase and lowercase input, turning typing into a timing-based action.
  • Google described optional features such as a high-speed mode, longer or compact belt variants, colorways, and the ability to pair two units for two-handed use.
  • Journalists framed the device as an intentionally impractical design exercise that trades horizontal desk space and typical ergonomics for a novel interaction model, making it more useful as a demo or maker project than a mainstream keyboard.
  • The conveyor keyboard continues a pattern of conceptual peripherals from Google Japan’s Gboard team and invites builders to test its one-handed idea rather than signaling any imminent commercial release.
