GB Snowboarder Maisie Hill Returns From 2023 Near-Fatal Crash, Pursues 2026 Olympic Qualification

Funding from the IOC’s Olympic Solidarity programme underpinned her return to elite competition.

Overview

  • Hill, 24, sustained a major brain bleed, a lacerated liver, a punctured lung, two fractured vertebrae and four broken ribs in a January 2023 training crash in Laax, Switzerland.
  • She was airlifted to a hospital in Chur for surgery and recalls relief at being able to wiggle her toes after the operation.
  • Nine months later she returned to snow, resumed World Cup competition within a year, and finished fifth at an Austrian World Cup in March.
  • An Olympic Solidarity grant, awarded after a GB Snowsport nomination, financed her comeback, and the IOC says 438 athletes from 89 NOCs are receiving monthly support toward Milano Cortina 2026.
  • She is rebuilding form with Team GB physiotherapy and sports psychology, using a simple smiling routine at the start of runs to restore confidence.
