Gaza Death Toll May Be 40% Higher Than Official Figures, Study Finds

A Lancet study estimates over 64,000 deaths from traumatic injuries in Gaza during the first nine months of the Israel-Hamas war, surpassing official tallies.

The peer-reviewed study, published in The Lancet, used capture-recapture analysis to estimate 64,260 deaths in Gaza from October 2023 to June 2024.
The estimate is 41% higher than the official Palestinian Health Ministry's count of 37,877 for the same period.
Researchers highlighted that 59.1% of the deaths were women, children, and elderly individuals over 65, but did not estimate the number of combatants killed.
The study excluded deaths from indirect causes, such as lack of healthcare or food, and did not account for thousands believed to still be buried under rubble.
Israeli officials disputed the findings, asserting that the military takes extensive measures to avoid civilian casualties, while accusing Hamas of using civilians as human shields.
