Gaza Ceasefire Tested as Reported Israeli Strikes Kill Civilians, Including Children

Reports of civilian deaths are fueling fresh accusations of ceasefire violations under a truce that has sharply reduced fighting since October.

Overview

  • Gaza’s civil defence reported seven to nine people killed on Jan. 8, including children, with a drone hitting a tent sheltering displaced people; a separate AP account cited health officials saying at least 13 were killed across Gaza.
  • The Israeli military said a projectile launched from the Gaza City area fell inside the enclave and that it then precisely struck the launch point, adding it was checking the reported casualties.
  • Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said the strikes show Israel has abandoned its commitment to the ceasefire.
  • Since the Oct. 10 US-brokered truce began, Gaza’s health ministry says at least 425 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli actions, while Israel says militants have killed three of its soldiers.
  • In parallel, the Israel Land Authority in December published a tender for 3,401 housing units in the E1 area near East Jerusalem, drawing criticism from the UN and Peace Now over threats to a contiguous Palestinian state.
