Gaza Aid Flotilla Reports Drone Attacks Off Crete as Italy Dispatches Frigate

Rome moves to protect Italian nationals after the flotilla reported 11 boats hit in international waters south of Crete.

Overview

  • Organizers said drones, sonic and flash devices, irritant sprays and communications jamming struck the convoy overnight with no reported injuries.
  • At least two vessels were damaged, including Zefiro with a broken forestay and Morgana with its mainsail rendered unusable, while Taigete was also affected.
  • Italy’s defense minister Guido Crosetto condemned the attack by as‑yet unidentified actors and sent the navy frigate Fasan toward the area for possible assistance.
  • Opposition parties PD, M5S and Avs occupied the Chamber of Deputies demanding government action, and Crosetto will brief Parliament the following day.
  • Flotilla organizers blamed Israel, which has said it will not allow a breach of its naval blockade and urged aid to be offloaded at Ashkelon, and reports note similar incidents off Tunisia earlier this month.
