Gavi to Purchase 500,000 Mpox Vaccine Doses for Africa

The global vaccine alliance aims to combat the outbreak in Congo and other affected regions with a $50 million fund.

Gavi will buy 500,000 doses of the mpox vaccine, manufactured by Bavarian Nordic, for African countries this year.
The Democratic Republic of Congo, the epicenter of the outbreak, has reported over 25,000 cases and 723 deaths in 2024.
The vaccines will be funded by Gavi's First Response Fund, a new financial mechanism established in June 2024.
Congo has received only a fraction of the 3 million doses needed, with initial deliveries of 250,000 doses from the EU and US.
Vaccination efforts will prioritize adults in the most affected provinces, starting on October 2, with a focus on high-risk groups.
