Gavaskar Takes Aim at ECB’s Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy Ceremony

He writes that the absence of the namesakes at the Oval presentation exposed flaws in the ECB’s decision to retire the Pataudi Trophy.

Overview

  • The ECB retired the Pataudi Trophy in June and inaugurated the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy alongside a newly created Pataudi Medal for captains.
  • The five-Test EnglandIndia series ended in a 2–2 draw with Shubman Gill and Harry Brook named joint Players of the Series.
  • In his August 11 Sportstar column Gavaskar questioned why Sachin Tendulkar, James Anderson and members of the Pataudi family were not invited to the Oval ceremony.
  • He argued that awarding the Pataudi Medal to captains in a drawn series undermines its purpose and suggested it should instead go to the Man of the Series.
  • The ECB has offered no public explanation for its ceremony decisions, leaving debates over heritage recognition and award procedures unresolved.
