Gauteng Says Matric Results Will Be Published in Newspapers as Regulator Presses Appeal

Publication plans face legal uncertainty due to the regulator’s pending appeal.

Overview

  • Gauteng education spokesperson Steve Mabona said newspapers will carry matric results, citing a court decision permitting publication.
  • The Department of Basic Education issued guidance directing learners to check results in local newspapers using exam numbers, or via the DBE website, SMS, or their schools.
  • The Information Regulator filed for leave to appeal and says its Enforcement Notice keeps a ban on newspaper publication in force while the appeal is pending under POPIA.
  • A three-judge Gauteng High Court ruling in December allowed publication of results provided only candidates’ exam numbers appear and rejected an IR bid to block it.
  • AfriForum said it may seek an urgent court order if newspapers do not publish, as the national results announcement is scheduled for 12 January.
