Gatlinburg Bypass Reopens After Landslide Cleanup in Great Smoky Mountains

A burst of 3.47 inches of rain in 90 minutes triggered the slide that shut the route over the weekend.

Overview

  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park announced Tuesday that the bypass is back open following several days of work.
  • Crews removed more than 140 truckloads of debris and cleared ditches, drainages and a culvert to restore safe travel.
  • The landslide occurred around noon Saturday near the park entrance sign, covering about 150 feet of roadway with 1 to 4 feet of material.
  • Park officials publicly thanked the City of Gatlinburg, Sevier County and the City of Sevierville for supporting the response.
  • During the closure, residents and delivery drivers reported heavier traffic on the Parkway, and the national park remained open.
