Gateway Tunnel Project Secures Additional $3.8 Billion in Federal Funding, Construction Imminent

70% of America's largest public works project funded as states see lowered financial burden; work commencement slated for end of year, completion expected in 2035.

  • The Gateway Tunnel Project, considered the largest public works project in the United States, is finally moving forward following an announcement of an additional $3.8 billion in federal funding. This brings the total federal contribution to over $11 billion.
  • One important aspect of this project is the creation of a new railway tunnel between New York and New Jersey, aimed to enhance the railway connectivity between the two states and repair the existing tunnel damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
  • The project will commence construction on both the New York and New Jersey sides of the Hudson River, with the new tunnel being built under Manhattan's West Side and the existing tracks undergoing significant repairs.
  • The additional federal funding eases the financial burden on New York and New Jersey, as the two states originally agreed to cover a quarter of the cost of the $16 billion Gateway Project. The exact amount that the two states will now contribute is unconfirmed.
  • When completed in 2035, the tunnel is expected to handle around 200,000 daily commutes. However, the project is not expected to increase the capacity of New York's Penn Station, needing additional expansion to accommodate more trains.
