Gateway Church Founder Robert Morris Pleads Guilty to 1980s Child Sex Abuse, Gets 6 Months in Jail

The rare decades-old case proceeded because Oklahoma law paused the statute of limitations when he lived out of state.

Overview

  • Morris, 64, pleaded guilty to five counts of lewd or indecent acts with a child before Osage County District Special Judge Cindy Pickerill.
  • Under a plea deal, he received a 10-year suspended sentence with the first six months to be served in the Osage County Jail and was taken into custody in court.
  • He must register as a sex offender, will be supervised in Texas under an interstate compact, and was ordered to pay restitution and his incarceration costs.
  • Prosecutors say the abuse began on Dec. 25, 1982, when Cindy Clemishire was 12 in Hominy, Oklahoma, and continued for about four years.
  • Clemishire, who came forward publicly in 2024, delivered a victim impact statement; Morris resigned from Gateway last year, and she has a pending civil suit seeking $1 million against him and the church.
