Overview

  • The Gates Foundation has committed $2.5 billion over five years to accelerate research and development in neglected areas of women’s health.
  • Funding will focus on five priority research areas: obstetric care and maternal immunization, maternal health and nutrition, gynecological and menstrual health, contraceptive innovation and sexually transmitted infections.
  • The initiative targets under-researched conditions such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, heavy menstrual bleeding, endometriosis and menopause.
  • Key innovations supported include a six-month injectable contraceptive and AI-enabled ultrasound tools designed to improve diagnostics in low-resource settings.
  • The foundation is calling on governments, investors, private sector actors and fellow philanthropies to co-invest and ensure equitable global access to future women’s health solutions.
