Gate Launches Ethereum-Compatible Layer 2 ‘Gate Layer’ With GT as Exclusive Gas Token

The rollout advances Gate’s push to build a full-stack web3 ecosystem centered on GT’s expanded role.

Overview

  • Gate Layer is built on the OP Stack, is fully EVM-compatible, and anchors settlement to GateChain.
  • GT becomes the sole gas token on the network and retains a dual burn model, with Gate reporting more than 180 million GT—about 60% of initial supply—already burned.
  • Gate is coupling the chain with new products: Perp for perpetuals, Gate Fun for no-code token launches, and Meme Go for real-time cross-chain meme token tracking.
  • Gate says the chain targets roughly 5,700 transactions per second with one-second blocks, estimates 1 million transfers would cost under $30 versus about $700 on Base and over $1,000 on Solana, and integrates LayerZero for transfers with Ethereum, Polygon, BNB Chain, and Solana.
  • GateChain has been upgraded to version v1.20 with EIP-4844 support and a Cancun-compatible EVM, and the launch reflects a broader exchange trend exemplified by Coinbase’s Base.
