Gaspar Roselló Dies in Mallorca Fall; University of Barcelona Announces Autumn Commemoration

  • Roselló fell minutes before 9:00 AM on a rocky outcrop at Cala Sant Vicenç in Pollença during a fishing outing with his 15-year-old grandson, and despite the deployment of GREIM mountain rescue teams, firefighters, medicalized ambulances and a rescue helicopter, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • A native of Pollença, Roselló moved to Barcelona at 17 to study Physical Sciences, earning his degree in 1973 and a PhD cum laude in Physics in 1981 before launching a research career in astronomy and astrophysics.
  • He served in senior leadership positions including UB Director of Academic Affairs, vice-rector for Academic Policy, Students and Quality, and advisor to the rector on the Bologna Process prior to his recent appointment as president of the Ateneo UB.
  • University officials praised his vision and dedication for modernizing UB’s governance and aligning it with European and international academic standards.
  • The University of Barcelona issued a statement lamenting his loss and announced that a commemorative event will be held in autumn to honor his transformative contributions.
