Gas Leak at Maharashtra Fertiliser Plant Kills 3, Injures 9

A reactor explosion at a Sangli district fertiliser plant released suspected ammonia fumes, leading to fatalities and hospitalisations.

  • The incident occurred at Myanmar Chemical Company in Sangli district's Shalgaon MIDC area on Thursday evening around 6:30 PM.
  • A reactor explosion at the plant caused a gas leak, with the fumes suspected to be ammonia, according to police and local officials.
  • Three individuals, including two women and a security guard, died after inhaling the toxic fumes, and nine others remain hospitalised.
  • Seven of the injured are being treated at Sahyadri Hospital in Karad, with five of them in critical condition in the ICU.
  • The deceased have been identified as Suchita Uthale (50) and Neelam Rethrekar (26), both from nearby districts, while investigations into the cause of the explosion continue.
