- Fire broke out Sunday morning on the third floor of the Sub-Post Office building near Railway Gate No. 8 in Bharalumukh, sending dense smoke across the area after a loud blast.
- Debabrat (Dev) Choudhury, 47, and Pompi Choudhury, 36, suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation and died while being taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
- The couple’s daughter, Pranavi, survived because she had stepped out to a neighbour’s home minutes before the incident.
- Fire officials said they received the alert at about 10:10 am and, as per initial reports, it took eight tenders roughly three hours to control the blaze, with two people rescued and sent to GMCH.
