Garnet Fire Reaches McKinley Grove as Some Giant Sequoias Ignite

Fuel-laden, beetle-killed timber in a long-unburned drainage set up the fire’s explosive run toward the grove.

Overview

  • As of Monday evening, the wildfire had burned 54,925 acres and was 14% contained, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
  • Aerial assessments and on-the-ground video showed embers igniting branches and flames in the crowns of several giant sequoias, with smokejumpers deployed and a 24-hour sprinkler system operating in the grove.
  • Evacuation orders and warnings remain in parts of eastern Fresno County, and a National Weather Service dense smoke advisory highlighted very unhealthy to hazardous air in Yosemite and Eastern Sierra communities.
  • Incident leaders say primary containment lines have largely held while crews strengthen the north and northwest flanks using strategic firing, heavy equipment, extensive hose lays and night-capable Chinook helicopters.
  • No structures have been reported lost, though spot fires, falling snags and steep terrain continue to limit safe access for direct suppression in and around the grove.
