Garmin Autoland Makes First Confirmed Emergency Landing in Colorado

Regulators are reviewing the first full activation of the system in an actual emergency.

Overview

  • The twin-engine Beechcraft Super King Air 200 experienced a rapid cabin pressurization loss after departing Aspen on Dec. 20, according to the operator.
  • The two pilots donned oxygen and chose to keep Autoland engaged, and the operator later said both were alert and uninjured.
  • The system selected Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport, alerted air traffic control, flew the approach, landed, brought the aircraft to a stop, and shut down the engines.
  • The FAA is conducting a standard review of the incident, and North Metro Fire Rescue released video showing the aircraft safely stopped on the runway.
  • Garmin says the self-landing feature is installed on about 1,700 airplanes, and the aircraft involved was operated by Buffalo River Aviation.
