Overview

  • The GAO found that the Secret Service received credible intelligence of an assassination plot at least 10 days before the Butler rally but had no process to disseminate tips to internal teams or local law enforcement.
  • A Senate Homeland Security committee report identified at least ten unfulfilled requests from Trump’s protective detail for assets such as counter-snipers, counter-drone systems and counter-assault teams.
  • Former director Kimberly Cheatle has rejected allegations that she misled Congress about denied support, insisting she authorized additional counter-snipers for the event.
  • In the wake of the investigations, six Secret Service agents were suspended without pay for periods ranging from 10 to 42 days over lapses in communication and planning.
  • Director Sean Curran says the agency has implemented substantive reforms and will use newly approved funding to upgrade technology, boost staffing and improve interagency coordination.
