GameStop Closes Nearly 500 U.S. Stores in January, Shrinking Chain Toward Fewer Than 2,000 Locations

The retailer frames the pullback as portfolio optimization tied to weaker in-store sales.

Overview

  • More than 475 U.S. locations have closed or are slated to close this month, with shutdowns confirmed via the company’s store locator and local reports.
  • Roughly 30 to 31 stores in New York are on the list, spanning the five boroughs, Long Island, Westchester, the Hudson Valley and upstate communities.
  • After the January cuts, overall store count is expected to fall below 2,000, down from a peak of more than 6,000 worldwide.
  • A December SEC filing signaled a significant number of additional closures for the fiscal year ending Jan. 31, while the latest quarterly report showed net sales slipping to $821 million from $860 million a year earlier.
  • Local property officials confirmed recent Long Island closures at Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream and Five Towns Shopping Center in Rosedale, and the company has largely declined to comment publicly.
