GameMaker Will Make GMRT Free for Commercial Use From January 2027

GameMaker says the change is meant to lower costs for indie creators by removing the Professional licence barrier to selling games on its next-generation runtime.

Overview

  • The company announced that GMRT will be free for commercial use starting January 1, 2027, allowing developers to sell games on desktop, mobile, web and GX Games without buying a Professional licence.
  • GameMaker is expanding source-code access to all subscription tiers so developers can inspect and adapt the runtimes and potentially contribute to projects.
  • Existing Professional licence holders will still be able to sell games built on the older GMS2 runtime and will receive access to the GMS2 runtime source code while tier pricing stays the same.
  • Console exports remain unchanged and will require an enterprise licence and approved-developer status regardless of which runtime a developer uses.
  • GMRT is still in beta and rolling out across platforms, so developers should check current platform support before committing projects; the move could lower costs for small teams and increase experimental and open development around GameMaker tools.
