This initiative responds to claims that the 2015 decentralization pact went unfulfilled, reflecting renewed bids by UDC and UVigo for medical faculties.

Overview

  • The working group on decentralizing the Medicine degree held its inaugural session at UDC’s A Maestranza rectorate on June 23 with the three university rectors and Xunta representatives.
  • UDC initiated formal procedures on May 28 to establish its own medical school, citing non-compliance with the 2015 clinical training agreement, and UVigo has made a parallel request.
  • USC’s rector maintains that new medical faculties in A Coruña or Vigo cannot proceed without an increase in regional MIR (Médicos Internos Residentes) positions.
  • The Xunta de Galicia approved more than €5.4 million to extend clinical training agreements between Sergas and the three public universities for health science students.
  • University of Vigo officials assert that their campus and local hospital network fully meet the teaching capacity and infrastructure requirements for a medical degree program.
