Galicia’s School Rolls Fall Again as 2025–26 Data Show Early-Years Drop and Urban Concentration

Provisional counts from the regional education department underscore demographic decline concentrated in early childhood cohorts.

Overview

  • Ourense province will start the year with 29,464 students, down 170 year over year, with the city of Ourense concentrating 15,020 enrollments, slightly over half of the provincial total.
  • The A Coruña metropolitan area totals 54,553 students for 2025–26, a decline of 704 from last year, with notable infant losses in the city (−193) and surrounding municipalities such as Arteixo (−43) and Culleredo (−22).
  • Enrollment declines are focused in Infantil and Primaria, while Bachillerato gains offset some losses in urban areas, including A Coruña (+95), Culleredo (+24), Oleiros (+16) and Arteixo (+16).
  • Special education in Ourense remains highly centralized, with 103 of the province’s 126 students in this stage enrolled in the capital.
  • Rural depopulation continues to thin school rolls, with more than twenty municipalities registering fewer than 30 students and fifty staying below 100 across all stages.
