Galician Courts Convene Multidisciplinary Task Force to Tackle Elder Abuse

The group will pool court, police, health, social-service data to map cases, guide a humane integrated response, draft a regional report

Overview

  • The Tribunal de Instancia de Santiago held the first formal meeting on Friday to constitute a working group that will coordinate detection and handling of elder abuse across Galicia.
  • The TSXG Sala de Gobierno approved creation of the group on March 27 after magistrate Ana López‑Suevos warned of rising cases linked to drug dependence, psychiatric illness, or abuse by caregivers.
  • Representatives from courts, the Fiscalía, Guardia Civil, Policía Nacional, the regional police, local police forces, Servizo Galego de Saúde and municipal social services attended the May 22 meeting.
  • The Tribunal Superior de Xustiza de Galicia has asked all 45 judicial districts for incidence data and is preparing a regional report to quantify cases and inform further action.
  • Officials say the next steps are to finish data collection, draft shared protocols for information exchange and combine justice, health and social resources to deliver effective, humane support to older victims.
