Galicia to Close Seven Rural Schools with Fewer Than Five Students

Officials say the plan will preserve educational access by reallocating pupils to nearby centers through guaranteed placements, alongside funding new and expanded facilities to match shifting rural demographics.

Overview

  • The Xunta de Galicia will close seven unitary rural schools in September 2025 after they failed to meet the five-student minimum threshold.
  • All affected pupils are guaranteed placements at the nearest reference centers under the Consellería’s reassignment scheme.
  • Three other unitary schools—Lamas, Taboadela and Ombre—with exactly five students will remain open under the revised enrollment rule.
  • Bidding has begun for three new educational centers, including the IES Domingo Villar in Vigo, and expansion works are planned for 18 existing schools and institutes.
  • The policy change lowers the minimum enrollment from six to five pupils as part of a broader response to sustained demographic decline in Galicia’s rural areas.
