Overview

  • Starting July 15, health areas across Galicia will implement the Código Trauma protocol in emergency departments, pre-hospital units and dispatch services.
  • Activation triggers include active bleeding requiring intervention, a shock index of 1 or higher, ventilatory support needs, pelvic fractures and other critical anatomical injuries.
  • It is the first regional code to integrate adult and pediatric care pathways under a single protocol for severe trauma.
  • By unifying response steps, the code aims to shorten the ‘golden hour’ to cut mortality and long-term sequelae among the roughly 3,000 annual trauma patients.
  • This protocol complements existing time-dependent codes for myocardial infarction, stroke, sepsis, anaphylaxis and cardiogenic shock in Galicia.
