Galicia Reports No Uncontrolled Wildfires as Fasgar Still Rages and Suspected Arson Triggers León Evacuation

Improved weather has slowed fire spread in the northwest.

Overview

  • Galicia stabilized its last two unruly blazes at A Pobra do Brollón (about 900 hectares) and Avión (about 250), with major Ourense fires such as Larouco, Chandrexa de Queixa and Oímbra now controlled or stabilized and A Fonsagrada declared extinguished.
  • The Fasgar fire in León, burning since August 8 and believed to have started by lightning during a dry storm, remains the country’s most troubling front as difficult terrain and winds hamper suppression.
  • A new blaze near Berlanga del Bierzo prompted the evacuation of roughly 400 residents, and the Guardia Civil detained a 20-year-old on suspicion of intentional ignition after multiple start points were detected.
  • Fire services report generally favorable progress in León and Zamora with some reactivations, as cooler temperatures and recent rains assist containment efforts despite gusty conditions.
  • This summer’s crisis has scorched vast tracts nationwide, with Galicia tallying about 96,000 hectares burned since July 1 against higher Copernicus estimates, tens of thousands evacuated and dozens of suspected arsonists detained.
