Galicia Reopens Cattle Fairs on Dec. 1 With Galician-Only Stock

Officials pair the limited reopening with strict surveillance to contain lumpy skin disease.

Overview

  • Fairs, markets and auctions resume on December 1 exclusively with animals from Galician farms, under a resolution to be published in the Galician Official Gazette and in force through December 31 with possible extension.
  • Vehicles arriving from outside Galicia must enter empty and disinfected under maintained biosecurity rules.
  • Cattle coming from other regions or countries remain subject to 21 days of official veterinary surveillance, with receiving farms immobilized and required insecticide treatment of animals and vehicles.
  • Official veterinarians will intensify inspections in coordination with police to enforce the measures.
  • The regional government seeks coordinated national measures with common indemnities and insurance coverage and urges the EU to review the disease’s classification to avoid blanket culling.
