Galicia Parliament Approves Modified Language Plan Over BNG Objections

The plan fixes a formal 50/50 school language balance while changing which subjects are taught in Galician and will begin a fast rollout that opponents say undermines the language’s protection.

Overview

  • The Parliament approved the modification on Wednesday with 50 of 75 votes from the PPdeG, PSdeG and the Mixed Group, while the BNG stayed out of the pact and abstained in the final reckoning.
  • Under the new rules the formal 50/50 distribution between Galician and Spanish is preserved, science subjects may be taught in Galician if a government-guaranteed “linguistic balance” is met, and some social subjects are shifted to Spanish.
  • BNG leaders and language activists called the agreement a step back that preserves elements of the contested 2010 plurilingualism decree, and more than a hundred demonstrators gathered outside the Parlamento to demand Galician be vehicular in schools.
  • The Xunta says the plan is the product of a participatory process coordinated by academic Manuel González, listing about 700 measures, 11 expert commissions and more than 1,400 proposals, and it has pledged 50 actions in the first 100 days of implementation.
  • The vote could deepen political and legal fights over implementation and classroom practice, with critics warning the changes may slow gains in Galician use seen as already weakened by demographic trends and the 2010 decree.
