Galicia Orders Strict Machinery Rules for Very High Fire-Risk Days

The measure aims to reduce midday machinery ignitions by requiring an observer and firefighting kit during declared high-risk periods.

Overview

  • The Consellería do Medio Rural published the order last Monday and it takes effect on Wednesday, July 1, applying through September 30 when the region’s daily fire-risk index (IRDI) is rated very high or extreme.
  • Between 12:00 and 18:00 on covered days the rule requires a dedicated observer, a vehicle with at least a 400‑litre water tank, a water‑based foam extinguisher of six kilos, two batefuegos and a 15‑litre backpack extinguisher.
  • Industry groups and the Sindicato Labrego Galego immediately challenged the timing and feasibility of the rules, saying they were issued without prior technical talks and cannot be implemented on such short notice.
  • Fearmaga estimates the rule would need roughly 450 adapted vehicles and 450 additional daily vigilance staff to cover current operations, a mobilisation it describes as impractical for many companies and small farms.
  • The Consellería defends the order as prevention based on past data linking hundreds of machinery‑caused fires to midday hours, while stakeholders have asked for clarifications on which activities are covered and how compliance will be enforced.
