Galicia Orders Quarantines, Castilla y León Halts Livestock Fairs as Girona DNC Outbreak Persists

Regional governments tighten preventive controls to contain the cattle disease beyond Catalonia.

Overview

  • At least 16 farms in Girona are infected, about 2,500 cattle have been culled, and roughly 152,000 animals remain immobilized under restrictions.
  • Six new positives this week were found inside the preexisting Alt Empordà control area, so restriction radii did not expand, and a suspected case in Osona tested negative.
  • Catalonia continues vaccinating priority herds with coverage around 70% in Alt Empordà, as EU rules keep full-farm culling in place until statutory vaccination thresholds and a 21-day wait are met.
  • Galicia ordered 21-day quarantines for any farm that brings in cattle from other regions or abroad, with mandatory disinsection of herds and transport vehicles for at least 30 days.
  • Castilla y León suspended livestock fairs and markets for 15 days, tightened vehicle disinfection, and barred entries from infected, protection or surveillance zones.
