Galicia Extends Metropolitan Fare Subsidies for Two Years as Vigo Stays Out

The pact commits €1.7 million with the regional government covering 80% of fare discounts.

Overview

  • The Xunta and twelve municipalities signed a two‑year renewal of the metropolitan interurban subsidy program, budgeted at €1.7 million with an 80% contribution from the regional government.
  • Vigo did not join the agreement, with the dispute focused on integrating its municipal urban service into the subsidized network.
  • The Diario Oficial de Galicia separately confirmed the Xente Nova youth card and the +65 senior fare will continue through 2026, allowing up to 60 free trips per month on interurban buses, Vigo estuary ferries, and Ferrol’s metropolitan rail.
  • From January to September 2025, the schemes logged about 7.7 million free trips and 39,000 new registrations, yielding an estimated €13.1 million in user savings.
  • Over the same period, Xente Nova added 20,000 registrations (132,000 active; 4.9 million trips) and the +65 tariff nearly 19,000 (over 167,000 total; more than 2.8 million trips, up 22%), with joint Xunta–State compensation of €8.7 million for youth and over €4.4 million for seniors.
