Galicia Extends Eucalyptus Planting Ban to 2030 With Targeted Flexibility

Officials say the tweak aims to curb further spread without worsening rural land abandonment.

Overview

  • The Xunta kept the moratorium on new eucalyptus plantings through 2030 and introduced two narrow exceptions.
  • In radiata pine stands severely affected by the brown band disease, replanting may include up to 50% eucalyptus, with the remainder in conifers or broadleaves.
  • Eucalyptus stands may be relocated to a different owner’s parcel with prior authorization, capping new eucalyptus to 75% of the original area and requiring the origin plot to be replanted with conifers or broadleaves.
  • The measures will be written into the law accompanying the 2026 regional budget, according to officials.
  • Green groups and sector representatives continue to press for updated forest inventory data, with public figures showing 419,000–422,000 hectares in 2022–2023 and an unpublished internal revision cited at about 430,000 hectares, as the region pursues a 5% reduction target by 2040 and weighs economic stakes for roughly 35,000 families generating around €205 million annually.
