Galicia Extends Cattle Disease Controls as Basque Country Seeks Full Vaccination and Halts Fairs

Basque officials plan to seek full-herd vaccination at the next Rasve meeting.

Overview

  • Galicia prolonged its preventive measures against contagious nodular dermatitis to February 1, 2026, with the resolution slated for publication in the Diario Oficial de Galicia on December 30.
  • Galician rules keep a 21‑day official surveillance period for cattle arriving from outside the region, with precautionary immobilization, mandatory disinfection of animals and transport vehicles, and direct-to-slaughter entry allowed for animals sent for culling.
  • Commercial cattle fairs in Galicia may proceed only with animals from Galician holdings, and extraordinary events require prior authorization from the regional livestock directorate.
  • The Basque Government suspended animal fairs and events from December 25 until at least February 26, citing newly confirmed cases in four French regions roughly 90 kilometers from Euskadi.
  • Basque authorities will press to vaccinate the entire regional herd after the ministry floated a Pyrenees-border strip plan that would exclude Bizkaia and much of Álava, while acknowledging vaccine doses are limited.
