Galeria Shifts 690-Strong Service Center From Essen to Düsseldorf

Reflecting Galeria’s post-insolvency turnaround strategy, the move leaves its heritage-listed Essen complex vacant with no set future.

Overview

  • All 690 employees of Galeria’s service center will relocate to the 1974-built RWI 4 building in Düsseldorf-Unterbilk on September 1.
  • The Essen headquarters was designed by Walter Brune between 1967 and 1969 and placed under heritage protection in 2017.
  • Portions of the Essen complex have been rented in recent years by the North Rhine-Westphalia state police.
  • The property, formerly owned by René Benko’s insolvent Signa Group, was handed over as part of Galeria’s insolvency exit plan.
  • The bus stop named “Karstadt Hauptverwaltung” will retain its name and is not scheduled for renaming.
