Gadkari Pledges Nationwide Barrier-Free Electronic Tolling Within a Year

Pilots are running at 10 sites, with FASTag-plus-ANPR MLFF systems moving into procurement as the highway ministry targets seamless travel.

Overview

  • Announcing the shift in the Lok Sabha, Nitin Gadkari said toll booths will give way to a fully electronic, no-stop model for highway fee collection.
  • Requests for proposals to deploy FASTag with AI-enabled number-plate recognition at selected plazas have been issued or finalised, with phased expansion tied to results.
  • The rollout builds on NPCI’s National Electronic Toll Collection platform, where FASTag RFID tags enable automatic debits from linked accounts.
  • The ministry also plans an Advanced Traffic Management System on all national highways of four lanes and above, using gantry cameras and central monitoring for incident detection and speed enforcement.
  • Gadkari noted about 4,500 highway projects worth roughly ₹10 lakh crore are under way as part of a broader modernization push to reduce congestion and delays.
