G7 Summit Concludes With Only Rogue Pilot Arrested

Investigators are considering charges against the pilot who breached summit airspace after RCMP declared the security operation a success.

Members of the Integrated Safety and Security Group, which was responsible for security surrounding the G7 summit, provided a briefing to media in Calgary on Wednesday.

Overview

  • On June 15, NORAD-scrambled CF-18 jets intercepted a civilian aircraft that violated the Kananaskis no-fly zone and guided it to a safe landing in Brooks, Alberta.
  • The RCMP-led Integrated Safety and Security Group spent months preparing by establishing no-fly restrictions and designated protest zones in Calgary and Banff.
  • Only one arrest occurred during the three-day summit—the rogue pilot—and no charges have yet been filed as investigators continue evidence-gathering.
  • Seventeen protest groups, totaling a few hundred participants, demonstrated peacefully within the designated areas in Calgary.
  • Officials managed over 200 wildlife incidents, mainly bear encounters, and expect to release the final security cost after completing demobilization.
