G7 Countries Agree on Voluntary AI Code of Conduct for Companies

Landmark 11-point AI Conduct Code Urges Companies to Identify, Evaluate Risk Lifecycles, and Publicly Report System Capabilities and Misuses

  • The Group of Seven (G7) countries — Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain, and the United States along with the European Union, have unanimously agreed to a voluntary artificial intelligence (AI) code of conduct for companies to mitigate potential risks and misuse.
  • Initiated in May at the 'Hiroshima AI Process', the 11-point code aims to promote safe, secure, and reliable AI globally, providing guidance for organisations developing advanced AI systems, such as generative AI models.
  • The code highlights the necessity for companies to identify, evaluate, manage risks across the AI lifecycle, and deal with incidents and patterns of misuse after AI products have been introduced to the market.
  • Companies are urged to publish public reports on capabilities, limitations, use, and misuse of AI systems, whilst investing in robust security controls to instill trust and transparency.
  • The European Union, a forerunner in regulating emerging technology with its hard-hitting AI Act, perceives this Code of Conduct as a bridge to assure safety until full regulations are in place.
