G20 Security Plan Triggers Gauteng Road Closures as OR Tambo Access Changes

Officials warn of rolling convoy shutdowns this weekend with flights operating as normal.

Overview

  • The Road Traffic Management Corporation confirms significant traffic disruptions and closures from 18 to 23 November across Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni.
  • Enforced rolling closures are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, 22–23 November, from 07:00–10:00 and 17:00–20:00 to secure G20 convoys.
  • OR Tambo access has changed, with Cargo Road and the main Arrivals Road closed and drop-offs routed to Parkade 2, though Acsa says flights operate normally.
  • Key routes targeted include the N1, N3, N12, M1, R21 and R24, with precinct restrictions in Sandton, Melrose Arch, Rosebank, Fourways, Nasrec and Roodepoort, plus full closure of Grayston Drive on 22 November (04:00–10:00) and tight controls on Golden Highway and around Nasrec/Rand Show Road.
  • Authorities urge motorists to plan ahead, expect 30–60 minute delays during convoy movements, use designated alternatives such as the M57 for the R21 and regional roads instead of the R24/N12, and follow real-time updates.
