Overview

  • NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a G2 (moderate) watch for Aug. 8–9 with geomagnetic Kp indices forecast to reach around 6
  • The storm originates from an Aug. 5 CME boosted by a coronal hole high-speed stream and is expected to weaken back to G1 later tonight
  • Aurora viewlines extend across roughly 15 northern U.S. states tonight, from Alaska and Washington through Minnesota to Maine
  • Skywatchers should head to dark, north-facing vantage points between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., using real-time aurora forecasts for best results
  • Minor, manageable effects on power and communications are possible, and the bright full Sturgeon Moon along with the upcoming Perseid meteor shower will influence visibility
