- Germany’s Gemeinsamer Bundesausschuss has decided to make a new U10 preventive check a statutory health benefit for children aged nine to ten.
- The U10 focuses on detecting possible overweight, low physical activity, excessive screen time and psychological or developmental signs using a standard parent questionnaire before the visit.
- The examination includes structured vaccination counseling aimed specifically at raising HPV vaccination uptake among preteens.
- The decision is not yet in effect because the Federal Ministry of Health must review it, the text may be published in the Bundesanzeiger if unchallenged, and a physician reimbursement rate must be negotiated before practices can bill insurers.
- If implemented, the U10 will close part of the gap between the current U9 at about age five and the next youth check, giving pediatricians an earlier chance to spot problems and guide families, though uptake will depend on how quickly administrative steps and payment terms are resolved.
