‘Fuzzy’ the Bear Caught Sampling Strawberry at South Lake Tahoe Ice Cream Parlor

Officials cite rising food conditioning in Tahoe bears, urging visitors to secure trash, keep food locked, give wildlife space.

Overview

  • Deputies responded around 4:11 a.m. on Aug. 17 to Camp Richardson’s Ice Cream Shop after a security guard reported a bear inside.
  • Photos show the animal, dubbed Fuzzy by the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, behind the counter sampling tubs and favoring strawberry.
  • Deputies used lights and loud shouts to guide the bear out the front door; no injuries were reported and damage and cleanup were minimal.
  • Staff discarded and replaced all ice cream, completed a deep clean, and reopened the shop later that day.
  • Officials say the Tahoe Basin holds about 500 black bears and report hundreds of bear-related calls in recent years, advising people not to feed bears, to secure food and trash, and to leave an escape route.
