Furano–Biei 'Norokko' Tourist Train Completes Final Run

JR Hokkaido said the service ended because its cars had aged and announced a planned replacement train for the route next June.

Overview

  • The Furano–Biei Norokko tourist train finished its last scheduled runs on September 23, 2026, drawing crowds of railfans, tourists and local residents along the Asahikawa–Furano line.
  • JR Hokkaido cited rolling‑stock aging as the reason for the retirement and confirmed the decision was an end of this train’s service rather than the end of tourist trains on the corridor.
  • On the final day all four scheduled Norokko services were reported sold out, and stations such as Furano saw people holding handmade signs and waving as trains departed.
  • The Norokko had run since 1998 as a three‑car formation over the 54.8 km Asahikawa–Furano section and was known for open views that drew long‑term tourism to Furano and Biei.
  • JR Hokkaido plans to introduce a successor tourist train called 'Aoi Hoshi' (Blue Star) on the same route starting in June next year, offering continuity for local tourism and rail enthusiasts.
