Fung-wong Weakens After Taiwan Landfall as Floods Persist, Philippines Counts Heavy Toll

Back-to-back cyclones have stretched responders, with Taiwan clearing flood damage as Philippine relief routes remain blocked.

Overview

  • Taiwan reported 95 injuries after Fung-wong made landfall in Pingtung and weakened to a tropical depression, with more heavy rain forecast for northern and urban areas.
  • Authorities evacuated more than 8,500 people from coastal and mountain zones, and schools and offices have largely reopened following two days of targeted closures.
  • Record rainfall hit eastern Taiwan, including 648 millimeters in Suao, where over 1,000 homes flooded as Yilan and Hualien saw waist-deep waters and road closures.
  • In the Philippines, officials raised the death toll to at least 27, with around 1.4 million people evacuated or displaced and rescue operations slowed by landslides.
  • Philippine agencies reported extensive damage including over 7,000 houses destroyed, 33,000 damaged, dozens of bridges and roads down, and millions affected, with the UN World Food Programme estimating 8.3 million impacted by this storm and the earlier Typhoon Kalmaegi.
