Fung-wong Triggers Taiwan Flooding After Killing 27 in Philippines

Record rainfall in eastern Taiwan shows the weakened storm still carries a dangerous flood risk.

Overview

  • Taiwan evacuated more than 8,300 people as neck‑deep flooding hit parts of Yilan, where Suao recorded 648 mm of rain in a day and more than 1,000 homes were inundated.
  • Authorities reported 51 injuries in Taiwan, widespread school and business closures in the south, and warned the system would skirt the island’s far south late Wednesday before moving back over the Pacific.
  • Taiwan’s meteorological agency said Fung-wong had weakened ahead of approach, previously estimating sustained winds near 108 km/h and warning of very heavy mountain rainfall.
  • In the Philippines, officials raised the death toll to at least 27, said 3.6 million people were affected, and detailed severe infrastructure damage as rescuers clear landslides and work to restore roads, power, water and communications.
  • Earlier protective steps included more than 3,000 evacuations and 66 flight cancellations in Taiwan, while China activated emergency typhoon responses in southeastern provinces.
